How Long Am I Going to Live?

"

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has re-evaluated our long-term life expectancy calculations, shifting how we look at aging in the UK.

Why Life Expectancy Calculations Matter

Life expectancy calculations are critical for far more than simply answering a perennial personal question. Any long-term economic projections—such as the stark fiscal forecasts produced annually by the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR)—rely on life expectancy as a foundational component.

However, life expectancy is just one moving part in a complex demographic puzzle. Other variables, including the UK’s fertility rate (currently sitting at roughly 1.4 children per woman) and net migration rates, are notably harder to accurately estimate over the long term.

A Surprising Shift in the Data

The ONS recently revised its projections for UK life expectancy, utilising historical data alongside updated mortality insights from its 2024-based national population projections.

While the ONS typically issues these updates every two years—and the latest figures show little change from their immediate 2022 predecessors—a close look back at the older 2014-basis projections reveals a stark and surprising shift.

A Slower Pace of Improvement

When tracking life expectancy for men and women reaching the age of 65 from 2020 onward, the downgrade becomes clear:

  • For a 65-year-old woman in 2026: Life expectancy on the updated 2024 basis has fallen by 1.8 years compared to what was projected on the 2014 basis.

  • For a 65-year-old man in 2026: Projected life expectancy has dropped by 2.4 years compared to the 2014 basis.

Make no mistake: overall life expectancy is still technically rising over time. However, the ONS has significantly dialled back its estimate regarding the pace of this ongoing improvement.

This deceleration could play a major role in the government’s upcoming decision on exactly when to accelerate the State pension age to 68; the age is currently on track to transition to 67 by April 2028.

The Big Question: Will Your Pension Last?

If you want to check the official ONS projection for your specific demographic, the organisation hosts a dedicated interactive calculator online.

When using it, it is wise to look past the headline average number. Scroll further down the page to analyse your individual life expectancy distribution and your statistical chances of reaching the age of 90 or 100.

For individuals over the age of 50, men currently face at least a one-in-three chance of celebrating their 90th birthday, while the odds for women are nearly even.

With the genuine probability of a multi-decade retirement ahead, the most critical question you need to ask yourself transforms from “How long will I live?” to “Is my pension actually going to last that long?”
